Town of Cheverly
News and Announcements
From Mayor Callahan
BREAK-IN TUESDAY: At at 1:13 PM today, a two masked intruders committed a burglary in the vicinity of Cheverly Circle and Cheverly Avenue. The intruders were apparently looking for computer equipment and other valuables when they were surprised by a resident returning home. This sparked the discharge of a handgun that was in the possession of one of the intruders. The weapon did not appear to be aimed at the home owner. The intruders immediately fled in an unknown direction by unknown means. At this time, there is insufficient information for which to produce a lookout.
The resident is fine having received a minor skin wound.
Home Prevention Information: The Cheverly Police Department reported a small increase in burglaries last year and that trend continues as there have already been four burglary events this year (two burglaries and two attempted burglaries) . Three of the four have occurred in the Ward 4 area east of Cheverly Avenue and South of Forest Road.
These four crimes involved little to no use of force, so it is important to Lock Every Window and Door. Please take a moment to walk around your residence and ensure that all windows are secured, and that all doors, especially those infrequently used, are locked. In addition, make sure all electronic game and computer systems have a your driver’s license (followed by the two-letter state abbreviation) inscribed on them rather than depending on foil-backed serial numbers that can easily be defaced.
The Cheverly Police have compiled a handout of deterrence and crime prevention tips specific to the Town and this handout is readily available at the police station. In addition, if you have been putting off getting a free home security survey, now is the time to have one done.
Lastly, take a moment to reach out to your neighbors and make them aware of crime issues in the Town. Nosey neighbors are your best defense to crime.
If you anticipate traveling, please inform the CPD so that we can keep a check on your home. If you have any questions or have any information that may help the police solve or reduce crime, please do not hesitate to call me at 301-341-1055. We pay rewards and insure confidentiality.
