Cheverly Sector Plan Letter Writing Campaign


Yesterday, November 21st, was the last day for written testimony to be submitted to the Clerk of the Courts regarding the Cheverly Sector Plan.  Approximately 500 letters and postcards were hand delivered to the Clerk's office. When asked the office staff responded that they had received 10 to 20 letters a day via normal mail.  It is reasonable to assume that the Clerk's Office received over 600 written testimonies, which means approximately 10% of Cheverly's population responded!  


An outstanding show of opposition!!  Conversations with MNCPPC Staff have indicated that they have never seen a campaign like this; both at the Public Hearing and via Written Testimony.  Kudos to all!!


Special thanks to Laila Riazi, Sheila Salo, Joani Horchler, Christal Surowicz and Jack Warner for their organizational efforts to support this campaign.  


While the opportunity for public input has closed for the Map Amendment Process, the Town Council will continue to pursue every avenue to oppose development of this primarily county owned public land.  To that end, the Town Council has delivered a Letter of Intent to acquire the county owned property in the area.   If the land is determined by the county to be surplus property, this should ensure that Cheverly has the "right of first refusal" for this land.  


Below is the timeline for the District Council's decision on the Cheverly Sector Plan Map Amendment: 


The process from here is:  


November 6th:     District Council Holds Public Hearing:  
November 21st:   Last Public Comments (lettters allowed) 
November 21st to
   December 6:     Planning Board Staff distill Public Comment for review. 
December 7th:     Planning Board public hearing reviews comment / 
                             makes decision. 
December 21st:   Planning Board decision forwarded to District Council
January 9th:         Planning Board Decision received accepted by District Council
January 23rd:       Earliest Date District Council can make decision as to 
                             whether to include Map Amendment
