Pepco’s Appliance Recycling Program Offers $50 Reward, Big Energy Savings
BETHESDA, Md., -- Pepco wants to pay customers for saving energy through its Appliance Recycling Program, which offers a reward and free at-home pickup of old, inefficient refrigerators and freezers.
Pepco’s Appliance Recycling Program allows customers to schedule a time of their choosing to have an old refrigerator or freezer picked up for free. Customers also will receive a $50 check four to six weeks later and can potentially save as much as three times that much each year through lower household energy costs. They can also boost those savings by having outdated room air conditioners picked up, for which they’ll receive an extra $25 reward. Customers can recycle up to two large appliances, like a refrigerator or freezer, and two room air conditioners for a total of $150 in rewards.
Older appliances waste far more energy than most people realize. Refrigerators and freezers manufactured before 1990 can use three times more electricity than newer models. Yet millions are kept plugged in for extra cold storage in basements and garages across the country.
Pepco’s Maryland residential customers can schedule a pickup time by calling 877-395-5540 or by visiting pepco.com/ApplianceRecycling. Refrigerators and freezers being picked up must be plugged in and working when the collection crew arrives and must have an inside dimension of 10 to 30 cubic feet. Most standard-size refrigerators and freezers will meet the size requirement.
“The removal and recycling of these old appliances is a great way for our Maryland customers to save money, make a little extra money and create extra space in the garage or basement,” said Pepco spokesperson Amy Friess. “It is also helps people reduce their energy consumption and their impact on the environment..”
Pepco works with JACO Environmental, which takes the appliance apart and recycles the pieces with a process that turns 95 percent of each unit into repurposed raw materials for new products. The appliance recycling process also safely extracts toxic substances such as mercury, oils and foam insulation to ensure they don’t become environmental hazards. The process prevents the release of ozone-depleting substances and powerful greenhouse gases contained in the cooling circuits and foam insulation.
The appliance recycling program is part of Pepco’s portfolio of energy efficiency programs that are designed to support Governor Martin O’Malley’s EmPOWER Maryland initiative to reduce energy consumption in the state by 15 percent by the year 2015.
