Opposition to Industry Small Cell Bill HB 654
The Town of Cheverly as part of the 157 member Maryland Municipal League (MML) is opposing the the Small Cell Industry Bill HB-654 and invites all residents to send a copy of the attached letter to Chairman Dereck Davis of the House Committee on Economic Matters as well as your State Delegation.
To be clear, MML and Cheverly embrace Small Cell Technology which is required for 5G wireless service. Recent rulings by the FCC, have eliminated almost all local control on fees and timetables. The primary remaining issue which localities currently have some say, is in regards to aesthetics.
Small Cell Technology requires fifty foot poles located approximately 100 feet apart and requires a 27 cubic foot box located at each pole (think refrigerator size). HB-654 will allow the Small Cell Industry to deploy this technology in public rights of way with no local local input as far as aesthetics.
If local counties and municipalities retain some local control on aesthetics we can minimize the impact of this technology on our streetscapes by creating standards that the industry must meet.
Please think about Cheverly’s local streetscapes where there are no telephone poles today, also consider the addition of these refrigerator sized boxes in our front yards near our existing poles.
Take a moment to send a note opposing HB-654 to Chairman Davis, and cc your delegation.
