Hurricane Florence
Today thru Wednesday will be mostly cloudy, highs in the 80’s, with showers and thunderstorms. Thursday thru Sunday, expect showers and thunderstorms, with highs in the 80’s and lows in the mid-70’s. There is a possibility that Hurricane Florence could significantly impact our region. As a result, we are encouraging everyone to prepare for the storm and asking stakeholders residing in flood prone areas to take proper precautions for the protection of their property. According to the National Hurricane Center, Florence was about 625 miles southeast of Bermuda as of 5 a.m. ET today. The storm had maximum sustained winds of 105 mph and was moving west-northwest at about 9 mph. Swells generated by Florence are affecting Bermuda and portions of the U.S East Coast already. There is increasing risk of life-threatening impacts from Florence including coastal storm surge, freshwater flooding from prolonged and exceptionally heavy rainfall, and damaging hurricane force winds.

As Florence approaches the coast or moves inland, this will increase the threat of both fresh water and tidal flooding across the region. While it is still too soon to determine the exact timing, location and magnitude of these impacts, the PGC Office of Emergency Management (PGC OEM) is closely monitoring the progress of this system.
